by Angela Merkel

“Ladies and Gentlemen,

I congratulate the winner of the presidential elections in the United States, Donald Trump, on his electoral victory.

The United States of America are an old and venerable democracy. Campaigning this year was an unusual, sometimes almost unbearable confrontation. I, presumably like many of you, was awaiting the outcome of the elections with particular suspense.

Whomever the American people elect in free and fair elections as their president, is a matter of significance far beyond the US. For us Germans, there is no other country outside the European Union with which we have a deeper connection than the United States of America.

Whoever rules this large country with its huge economic might, its military potential, its cultural influence, has a responsibility that is felt virtually everywhere in the world. The men and women of America have decided to hand this responsibility for the next four years to Donald Trump.

Germany and America are bound by common values: democracy, freedom, respect for human rights and the dignity of every person, regardless of their origin, skin colour, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or political attitude. It is on the basis of these values that I offer the future president of the United States of America, Donald Trump, a close cooperation.

Partnership with the United States is, and will remain, a keystone of German foreign policy, so that we can tackle the great challenges of our time: the pursuit of economic and social well-being, the effort for a proactive climate policy, the fight against terrorism, poverty, hunger, and disease, the commitment to peace and freedom – in Germany, in Europe, and in the world.

Thank you.”

Angela Merkel has been Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany since 2005.
